Hi Space! Welcome back then :) I have not tried AP painter, but it's been interesting to hear others' thoughts on it. As for what you said about the flatter categories- most APers I know (including myself) hear pitch classes as categories, and can have subcategories within the pitch class. Usually t...

Yeah, I've seen it, it's very interesting. I think part of the reason this study works is because first of all, the alteration happens very slowly, and second of all, it does not go over a quarter tone and thus start feeling like it's the next category. I do wonder how far one could take this and ho...

But isn't that perceptual layer just relative pitch and how the pitch is in relation to the harmonic structure? Or does it really work so that you might actually hear a certain pitch as either F# or G depending on the context? In this case the pitch would be F# that is a bit sharp (so that it would...

1) This seems to be a nice example of categorical perception – people seem to really see this as either or (not as something that is in between). Some people see it as blue and black, others as white and gold. Even people who tend to switch between the two, always see it as having one set of colors...

Chris, is the minor seconds test for RP or AP listeners? Or either?

Hi Nick, I'm sure you will have better luck. I've heard some stuff about Burge's course being a scam before (although I haven't tried it, so I don't have personal experience with it). Have fun on your journey :D

Hi nwalker, welcome and good luck on your journey! Yeah, you'll save yourself money with prolobe... I've heard that it's comparable to some other systems as well.

So in the end, you can either force yourself to pay attention or just ... end up paying attention unintentionally. I would like to steal your quote (adjusted as above) and make it a classroom motto for my kids. This made me chuckle :D Seriously though, I feel if you're paying attention unintentiona...

I dunno if it's similar to APP, but it can't hurt to try approaching this from a new angle (guitar tuning). This sounds like it would be helpful anyway, and if you really want to focus on AP I'd suggest just doing one string at a time, not doing more than that, because it would be easy to slip into ...

I'm guessing by border tones you mean tones that could be either one or the other in terms of chroma. I agree- those can be tricky even for many APers. They can be quite odd sounding and throw me a bit of a loop as they sound kinda like both the notes around them, but not really. I keep reading the ...

Yeah, the keys have different characteristics, as do individual notes and chords (the note of the tonic + RP functions). I'd say score reading is still something I'm practicing... for anyone, that takes a lot of practice and can be quite challenging, especially highly complicated contemporary works....

Well, a key signature tends to imply a key... so I just start reading along and it becomes clear what key I'm in. After that, the adjusting sort of just happens automatically to fit the key. I suppose this goes along with establishing a key center in my ear... which makes sense since keys have their...

I've seen this too- it's like changing shades of colour slowly, over a longish time period. Note also, that the shift never actually moved from one chroma category to another. It would be interesting to test this so it moved over a quarter tone and transitioned from one pitch class to another. The c...
