For what it's worth the pianist I know who have perfect pitched all Learned fixed doh at an early age, most through the Yamaha system. It is true that the aural curriculum at a university level is no where near intense enough and regular enough to develop AP. I had fixed doh but I wasn't required to...

Memory Block and AP

A bit random, but today I had an experience in a non-music domain that reminds me of the problem with learning AP. So I have two bank account logins. I know both of them off by heart and don't normally have to really think about them. Except today, I went to log in, and I thought of the wrong login ...

I think the main problem with APA is that it doesn't use tonal/musical examples... Therefore you never learn to properly differentiate between the Chroma and the scale degree in different situations. So even if you've mastered the note "c" in APA, if you're listening to a piece in say F, the dominan...

Key Triggers rather than melody triggers

Just wondering if you think it would be possible to create triggers for an entire key rather than for a specific pitch? If you have the key, you can use relative pitch and there isn't the same problems with context as with melody triggers. How would/could one go about that, however? Anyone have any ...

Perfect Pitch is a Physical Phenomenon?

Hello all, So I was reading this interesting study from 2011. In particular, I found interesting the information about the perceptual distortions as they seem to imply that absolute pitch is the brain identifying based on what parts of the cochlea are activated by sound: http://www.pnas.org/content/...

Perceptual Differentiation & "Perfect Practice make

Hi Chris (and others), I know that a lot of you ear training approach is based upon perceptual differentiation and you have talked about how adults learn by perceptual differentiation. I'm wondering how this relates to practicing and perfecting, for example, a performance of a piece of music? Does i...

In fairness to your teacher, and having been in the situation myself, he may have been struggling with the difficulty of teaching something as potentially subjective as functional feeling when some of the class just don't hear it. In that situation, having learn bass and melodic shapes that you can...

The thing I like about it is that it's teaching the functional harmony. You don't have to think about what is in the bass of the chord or work out the inversion, then apply theory and figure it out etc. You can hear it as an over all effect of the music and go "Ahh, this is in the dominant area of t...

A Very Intuitive Way of Teaching Harmony

This is a wonderful, succinct and effective way of helping people to begin the process of relating harmonic events with their musical labels. It gives people something tangible about each chord's function to grasp onto for learning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZPwzppF_Vw&feature=share&list=RD02D...

Zacpacx, not nearly as daunting as you might think. Find a database search (Or just use google), enter your keywords and read the abstracts of anything that seems of interest. If it is promising skim the whole thing for relevant points. Also, Chris has a huge biographical list of AP literature on th...

One last thing. I have a friend that "developed" AP from Fixed-Doh solfege.

However, he's the only person I've heard of doing so, so I suspect that he already had it, but had never applied naming to it.

Btw... I read through one of the research papers that tested the Burge Perfect Pitch Course's effectiveness... I was shocked by the results. Most people experienced only a 10-20% increase in accuracy with 6 months of application. Not a single person gained a 100% score on any of the tests. And even ...
