Re: Varying timbre

Honestly, I'm not sure-- I just know that every time I indicated a note other than the standard MIDI it didn't work on a PC. What "control change messages" are you referring to?

Re: Varying timbre

The Mac could handle that stuff just fine—but the PC build would just play noise. It was frustrating.

Re: Questions about the program

There are four games in the Ear Training Companion: Absolute Pitch Avenue, Absolute Pitch Painter, Interval Loader, and Chordhopper. Absolute Pitch Avenue and Chordhopper will improve your ability to detect individual pitches in musical sounds. Unfortunately, as the success of these games made me di...

Re: Buying the course

Hi there! Yes, the site is still alive. I apologize for your post never showing in the forum; what you don't see is that, as a moderator, I'm receiving about 1000 spam messages every two weeks. I try to spot the real messages among the spam and approve them, but it's not easy. I'm hoping that upgrad...

Re: Fix for delayed pitch in APP level-up round

Thanks for catching that. The ID3 tag isn't used by the ETC program for anything, so changing it shouldn't affect game play (except removing that split-second delay!).

Re: Purpose of Chordhopper for Adults

From what I know, the "turning off" (or on) of absolute pitch isn't actually a thing. The appropriate comparison, as I understand it, is that of listening to someone talk. When someone talks to you, you hear all the individual letter-sounds (phonemes), and if you were asked name them all y...

Re: Purpose of Chordhopper for Adults

I'm sure that there are many and varied (and passionate) opinions about the value of chords and intervals to musicianship, composition, and musical experience. I'll leave that kind of speculation aside for the moment and answer the question you've asked: what good is Chordhopper to adults? The answe...

Re: Reinstalling the program-Retreive previous levels

I'm not sure how I missed this message for so long—sorry about that. The ETC program doesn't need to be "installed". Once run, ETC does create a passel of data files (named ETC*). If those data files exist already, ETC reads the files and does not create new ones. So if you were to recover...

Re: Good Relative Pitch can get you through APA

Yes, that's right. My learning about the principle of perceptual differentiation is what led to Absolute PItch Avenue. I still haven't cracked the categorical-perception nut—Absolute Pitch Painter is effective to a degree, but ultimately is limited by the amount of trials it's possible to include in...

Re: Reading experience

Part of it I wrote about in Phase 12 (see July 11)—about how I perceive larger "chunks" than others who look at each individual word. Have you read that part?

Re: Good Relative Pitch can get you through APA

I think it's probably fair to say that you're right, in that the further levels are "just harder versions" of the earlier levels. The increasing levels see the target tone situated in increasingly complex chords and sequences. But scientifically, psychologically, it doesn't matter whether ...

Re: Newbie question

The full program is different from the demo because the higher levels of each game are "unlocked". Once you're using the full version, you'll be able to get past (for example) level 120 on APA, after which you can add more pitches than just C.

Re: Musings on a game that could induce categorical perception

I suspect that might be at least somewhat effective for little kids, but I don't think it would work for older children or adults—even if it did make an impression, I'm not certain that the impression would last outside the game. Conversely, though, I wonder how effective it would be if the player h...
